An Unlikely Sport

Lacrosse is often associated with the prep schools and elite universities of the East Coast. The sport has been featured prominently in the news a few times in the past year, but generally not in a positive light. A new documentary — by filmmaker Gabriela Cowperthwaite — offers a starkly different perspective.

City Lax: An Urban Lacrosse Story follows a group of 12-year-olds from inner-city Denver that has found opportunities in lacrosse. While the sport is the primary vehicle for the filmmakers, City Lax is ultimately the story of a group of kids determined to succeed.

What is it about lacrosse that has so successfully engaged these young people? How does the community respond to a sport that many have never heard of, let alone seen played? Can the team win the state championships?

City Lax will be screened at the AFI Theater on Thursday June 3rd as part of AFI/Silverdocs’ Sports Series.

  1. This looks amazing. As somebody who grew up playing lacrosse on the east coast, I am thrilled to see it’s progression out west and ESPECIALLY the positive influence it’s having in the urban community. GREAT JOB DENVER!!
